THE SUBSTANCE

MOTION GRAPHICS, DESIGN, AND VISUALS CREATED WITH AFTER EFFECTS

OVERVIEW

This project was my chance to dive deep into motion design’s language, experimenting with how visuals and sound can work together to amplify storytelling; and I had A LOT of fun with it.

My goal was to visualize and design a verse from The Substance (2024). I was drawn to the film’s tone and its masterful use of sound, which plays a critical role in every scene. The immersive audio design felt like the perfect foundation for the dystopian, futuristic atmosphere I wanted to explore; and it allowed me to play with the film’s essence, while visualizing a story of my own.

CHALLENGES

The main challenges I faced were in the concepting phase, particularly in creating a cohesive design that captured the aesthetic I envisioned. Without a clear plan for translating my vision into visuals, creating strong compositions became the biggest challenge. On top of that, finding the right assets to match and enhance the design made the process even harder.

It was frustrating to have such a vivid idea of the aesthetic in my mind but struggle to bring it to life on screen. Balancing the various elements to create a harmonious and impactful design was a constant challenge with every composition.

SOLUTION

Since this was an introductory project to motion design, I embraced a playful approach to the challenges that I was facing. I experimented freely until I landed on designs I felt confident with and could finally start animating.

One of the biggest breakthroughs came from allowing the work to look “bad” in the early stages. I had to let the work in front of me be bad for a minute, and this acceptance allowed me to play my way through. I revisited the core idea I wanted to portray, using it as a foundation to test what worked and what didn’t.

Through multiple tests, I refined my approach, eventually coming up with a cohesive design and color theme that tied every composition together. This process of trial and error was key to bringing my vision to life.
